Buy Underwood Typewriters

Underwood is one of the most legendary names in the history of typewriting.
Founded in 1895 in the United States by John Thomas Underwood, the company originally manufactured typewriter ribbons and carbon paper. However, after acquiring the designs of Franz Xaver Wagner, Underwood launched the Underwood No. 5 in 1900 — widely regarded as the first truly modern typewriter, thanks to its visible writing mechanism, four-row keyboard, and efficient design.

During the first decades of the 20th century, Underwood dominated offices, newspapers, and administrative institutions.
Production was centered in New York and Hartford, Connecticut, and its machines became a global standard.
In 1959, Olivetti acquired a majority stake in the company, completing a full merger in 1963.
Some machines continued to be produced under the Olivetti-Underwood name until the late 1970s.
