Olympia is a historic German brand, synonymous with robust engineering, functional design, and a strong presence in offices and homes around the world.
Founded in 1903 as part of the AEG conglomerate under the name Union Schreibmaschinen-Gesellschaft, later Europa Schreibmaschinen AG, Olympia became its official brand name in the 1930s.

After World War II, the main factory was reestablished in Roffhausen, near Wilhelmshaven, where Olympia Werke AG continued to produce manual, portable, and desktop typewriters throughout the 1950s, 60s, and 70s.

In our store, you’ll find restored and fully functional Olympia typewriters, available with keyboards in various languages — ideal for collectors, enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a vintage typewriter with industrial elegance and proven reliability.

Why Choose Olympia

A Century of German Craftsmanship and Prestige

Olympia’s legacy is rooted in early 20th-century Germany — a hallmark of quality, precision, and solid engineering.
Every machine embodies the country’s industrial spirit, making Olympia one of the most respected names in mechanical design.

Wide Range of Models and Sizes

Olympia produced a broad spectrum of models:

  • The SM Series (medium/large size)

  • The SG Series (office typewriters)

  • The SF Series (portable)

  • And the popular Traveller de Luxe, launched in 1969.

These lines offered reliability, portability, and refined aesthetics — blending usability with timeless design.

Functional Design and Industrial Elegance

Olympia machines are known for their clean lines, metal finishes, and excellent assembly quality.
They embody simplicity and order — machines built to work, endure, and look elegant without excess ornamentation.

Easy to Restore and Maintain

Thanks to their high production volume and mechanical consistency, Olympia typewriters are among the easiest to restore.
Universal ribbons, replacement keys, and internal components are still available from vintage markets, and most restorers are very familiar with these machines.

Strong Collectible Value

Olympia remains a favorite among collectors.
Its reputation, iconic models (like the SM and Traveller series), and mechanical reliability make it one of the most enduring and valuable brands in the vintage typewriter world.

Frequently Asked Questions about Olympia Typewriters

What’s the difference between the SM, SG, and Traveller models?

SM (Schreibmaschine Mittelgroß) – Medium or large desktop typewriters (produced approx. 1948–1979). SG – Larger, office-grade machines; some were later electric. Traveller de Luxe – Portable model launched in 1969, designed by Alfons Boothby and Georges Joseph, with lightweight construction and refined finishes.

Do Olympia typewriters include the “Ñ” key?

It depends on the production batch and market. Spanish or Latin models often include it, but international versions usually do not.

Can old Olympia typewriters be restored to full function?

Yes. When properly serviced — cleaned, oiled, and adjusted — Olympia typewriters often return to near-original performance. Their keystroke feel and alignment precision are among the best in the vintage range.

Are Olympia typewriters a good collector’s investment?

Definitely. Their mechanical excellence, iconic design, and continued demand ensure stable or increasing value over time — especially for rare or fully restored models.
