L.C. Smith & Bros. (L.C. Smith & Brothers) was one of the most important American brands in the early development of typewriter technology.
Founded in 1903 in Syracuse, New York, by brothers Lyman C., Wilbert L., Hurlburt W., and Hurlbut Smith, the company emerged after separating from the Smith Premier Typewriter Company.

The first LC Smith models were known for being solid, reliable office typewriters, featuring visible typing mechanisms (“visible typewriters”) — a major innovation at the time.
In 1926, LC Smith merged with Corona Typewriter, giving rise to Smith-Corona, which would go on to revolutionize portable typewriters throughout the 20th century.

In our shop, you’ll find restored and fully functional LC Smith typewriters, ideal for both collectors and enthusiasts seeking authentic writing machines with American industrial presence, mechanical precision, and historical value.

Why Choose an LC Smith Typewriter

An American Industrial Legacy

LC Smith represents the finest of early 20th-century U.S. design and craftsmanship.
Each machine tells a story — created for professionals and offices that valued durability, clarity, and reliability in every keystroke.

Robust Construction and Mechanical Excellence

Built to last, LC Smith typewriters feature heavy metal frames, visible typing mechanisms, strong gears, and dependable carriages.
Even after a century, properly restored models operate with impressive precision and strength.

Commanding Desktop Presence

LC Smith typewriters are instantly recognizable by their imposing size, metallic weight, and distinctive sound.
They make perfect centerpiece pieces — for an office, a writing studio, or a vintage-inspired interior that values character and craftsmanship.

Parts Compatibility and Ribbon Availability

Following its merger with Corona, many LC Smith models share compatible components, making restoration easier.
Standard 13 mm universal ribbons work well, and the typewriter restoration community maintains active networks for sourcing parts and accessories.

High Collectible Value

Well-preserved LC Smith machines — particularly those with visible type mechanisms and original nameplates — are highly prized by collectors.
Their heritage, durability, and manufacturing quality make them sought-after pieces that hold, and often increase, their value over time.
